Catherina Rosemann

     Catherina Rosemann was born on September 21, 1832 at Osnabruck, Westphalia, Germany. She was also identified as being born in September, 1833 in Germany in the 1900 U.S. Census. She was confirmed on July 25, 1847 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri,she was shown as 15 years old.

      She emigrated with Herman Henry Rosemann on September 18, 1848 from Osnabruck, Westphalia, Germany; by ship. She immigrated on November 29, 1848 to Kirkwood, Missouri, traveling by ship from Osnabrueck, Germany.

     Catherina Rosemann married (--?--) Gausepont before 1850 at Illinois. She had three children in this marriage, all of whom died before 1862. She was widowed by the death of her husband, (--?--) Gausepont, before 1862.

     Catherina Rosemann married Franz Berg, son of Gotlieb Andreas Schamberger and Theresa Voglin, on May 3, 1862 in Kirkwood, the marriage ceremony was performed by Doctor Hugo Krebs, the best man was David Rosemann, the maid of honor was Mary Ann Rosemann. 

      She was a beneficiary in the will of Herman Henry Rosemann on January 31, 1863. She was enumerated with Franz Berg, as "Catherina Berg", on the 1870 U.S. Census at Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, she was listed as a 37-year-old white female born in Hanover, both of her parents were foreign born. 

     She was a sponsor for Lima Catherine Vennemann's baptism on November 26, 1871 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Kirkwood. She was widowed by the death of her husband, Franz Berg, on May 27, 1872. She was a sponsor for Catherine Mary Emma Rosemann's baptism on December 24, 1876 at St. Peter Catholic Church. She lived in 1880 in Des Peres, St. Louis County, Missouri. 

     Catherina Rosemann is a head of household on the 1880 U. S. Census at Central Township, St. Louis County, Missouri, as "Catherine Berg" she was shown as a widowed 48-year-old white female born in Germany. Enumerated with Catherina were Anna Antonia Berg, Frederick Herman Berg, Otto Berg, and Maximilian Francis Berg. Catherina Rosemann is enumerated on the Agriculture Schedule of the 1880 U.S. Census at Central Township, St. Louis County, Missouri. She owned 19 acres of tilled land, 10 acres of permanent meadows, pastures, orchards, vineyards and 3 acres of woodland valued at $3,000.00. She also owned live stock valued at $100.00. She had 5 acres in Indian Corn, 1 in potatoes, 10 in apples and 2 in vinyards. She had sold 3,700 pounds of grapes during the year. She was a sponsor for Katherine F. Berg's baptism on May 11, 1882 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Kirkwood. 

     She and John Knierim obtained a marriage license on June 28, 1882 at the County Clerk's Office, Clayton, St. Louis County, Missouri, recorded in book 1, page 113. Catherina Rosemann married John Knierim on June 29, 1882 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Kirkwood, the marriage ceremony was performed by Reverend Bernard G. Stemker, the maid of honor was Maria Theresa Berg. She was a sponsor for Otto Roseman's baptism on January 25, 1891 at St. Peter Catholic Church. 

     She was a sponsor for Leonard Maximilian Berg's baptism on September 11, 1892 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. She was a sponsor for John D. Berg's baptism on April 16, 1893 and for Viola Frances Berg's baptism on November 29, 1895 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in  Kirkwood. 

     She was enumerated with John Knierim, as "Kate Knierim", on the 1900 U.S. Census in Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, she was listed as a 66 year old white female born September 1833 in Germany. She imigrated to the U. S. in 1845, living in the U. S. for 55 years and could read write and speak English. She had been married eight years in the present marriage and had eight children, all living. 

     She and John Knierim lived in June, 1900 on Washington Avenue in Kirkwood. She was a sponsor for Rose Catherine Geders' baptism on April 7, 1907 at St. Peter Catholic Church. She was enumerated with Maximilian Francis Berg, as "Cath Kneirim", on the 1910 U.S. Census in Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, listed as a 77-year-old white widow residing with her son and born in Germany. She was employed as a mid-wife in public practice and had seven children, all living. She lived with Maximilian Francis Berg in 1910 at 419 North Geyer Road in Kirkwood. She was a member of the Altar Society of St. Peter's Catholic Church in January 1917. 

She left a will on May 6, 1917, The terms of her will were:

I, Katharina Knierim, being of sound mind and memory, do make & endorse this my last will and testament, hereby revoking any and all other wills I may have made at previous times.

1st. After the payment of all my just debts I request my executor to pay my funeral and burryal expenses as soon as possible.

2nd. I give to my son Fred H. Berg three promissory notes given by him to me, viz: one note dated July 27, 1904, one note dated March 15, 1910, and one note dated Sept. 11, 1911. Said three notes with unpaid interest to the present date amounting to about Five Hundred & Fifty Dollars, with what other interest may accrue thereon, shall be his share in my estate

3rd. To the heirs of my son, John B. Berg, my daughter Antonia A. Deutschmann, and my son Max F. Berg, I give all the remainder of my estate, share and share alike.

4th. I appoint my son Max F. Berg as my sole executor, without bond, signed by my hand this 10th day of July, 1916.

     Catherina Rosemann died on May 6, 1917 in Kirkwood, at age 84 of old age. Her wake was held on May 9, 1917 at 419 West Washington Avenue in Kirkwood, her residence. Her funeral service was held on May 9, 1917 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Kirkwood, following the viewing at her residence. She was buried on December 14, 1917 in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in the Bernard H. Rosemann plot in section 1, row 20, lots 1 & 2 NH, grave 8 along with her son, Otto, and step-daughter Theresa Roseman.

From the Deutschmann family history:

      "Catherine Rosemann was born in 1832 in Osnabruck in the Westphalia region in the northern part Germany. When she was 16 years old, her family moved to America and settled in St. Louis County.

      "Catherine married a man named Gausepont. They lived in Illinois and had four children, three of whom died at a young age. Shortly after the death of the children, her husband also died leaving her a widow at an early age.

       "She then met and married Franz Berg on May 3, 1862. They had four children; when the youngest, Antonia, was very young, Franz died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

      "During her life, Catherine was a practicing midwife. By this and other jobs in the farm community, she supported her family after her husband's death. She was able to build a home for her family on some of her husband's property (at the site of Chastain's Retirement Home on Manchester Road near Lockett Road in Des Peres).

     "She was a very good natured woman and lived to be 84 years old. She died on May 6, 1917 and is buried in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Kirkwood, Missouri."
