William Edward Madel

William Edward Madel was born on November 29, 1870 at Jefferson, Marion County, Texas. He was baptized on January 11, 1871 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jefferson, Marion County, Texas, by Father Jean Marie Giraud the sponsors were E. Kleinback and Marie Merzbacher. 

After the early death of his father, he moved along with his mother Margaret Reilly in 1875 from Jefferson, Texas to St. Louis, Missouri. He lived with Margaret Reilly from 1880 to 1883 at 2829 Penrose Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. 

He was enumerated with Margaret Reilly, as "Willie Meddell", on the 1880 U.S. Census at St. Louis, Missouri, he was listed as a ten-year-old white male born in Texas, he could not read or write but had attended school during the year. 

He was a witness at a coroner's inquest held after the death of his sister Mary January 31, 1890 St. Louis, Missouri. 

William Edward Madel is a head of household on the 1900 U. S. Census at St. Louis, Missouri, as "William Maddell" he was listed as a single 27-year-old white male born in Texas in November 1872. His father was listed as born in Missouri, his mother as at sea. (His father is identified in all other documentation as being born in Louisiana, his mother said she was born on the ship from Ireland to New Orleans.) He was a paperhanger who was out of work for six months during the year and rented a house at 5723 Cote Brilliante Avenue, St. Louis. Enumerated with William were Margaret Reilly and William J. Whalen. 

He was a painter and paperhanger from 1900 to 1935 at St. Louis, Missouri. He lived in 1900 at 5703 Cote Brilliante Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. Margaret Reilly and William J. Whalen were living with him. ( Cote Brilliante was French for "bright hill" and came from the name for an Indian burial mound located at the intersection of Kingshighway and Martin Luther King Boulevard and was named for the way the sun reflected off of the mound. St. Louis was known as the Mound City because of the many Indian mounds in the area). He lived with Margaret Reilly in 1902 at 5739 rear Theodosia Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri.

 William Edward Madel married Ellen Agnes Head, daughter of Michael Head and Margaret Healy, in 1905 at St. Louis, Missouri. 

Ellen and William Edward Madel lived from 1907 to 1910 at 6319 Audry, St. Louis, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Thomas and Roy. Their nephew William Edward Madel also was living with them. He had a shop which was called "Modern Art Wall Paper" in 1908 at 5449b Easton Avenue, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri. 

William Edward Madel is a head of household on the 1910 U. S. Census at Wellston, St. Louis County, MIssouri, he was a 34 year old white male born in Missouri. His mother was listed as born in Texas and his father in Missouri (this probably should have been father in Louisiana and mother in Ireland or at sea and William in Texas based on other documentation.) He owned a house at 6319 Audry Avenue that was mortgaged, just a few houses away from his brother- and sister-in-law (Ed and Kate Shulenberg). Enumerated with William were Ellen Agnes Head, Roy Madel, Thomas Edward Madel, and William J. Whalen. Ellen and William Edward Madel lived in 1917 at 1571 Valle Avenue, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Roy, Marie and Thomas. Ellen and William Edward Madel lived between 1918 and 1920 at 1415 Cockrell Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Marie and Thomas; Cockrell Avenue originally crossed Ella Avenue however it no longer exists in 1999. 

William Edward Madel is a head of household on the 1920 U. S. Census at St. Louis, Missouri, he was listed as a married 45 year old white male born in Texas. His mother was born in Ireland and his father in Missouri. 

William rented a house at 1514 Cockrell Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri and was a paper hanger with his own store. Enumerated with William were Ellen Agnes Head, Marie Ellen Agnes Madel, and Thomas Edward Madel. He was a decorator in 1922 at 1421 Cockrill, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri. Ellen and William Edward Madel lived from 1922 to 1925 at 6114 Ella Avenue, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Thomas and Marie. He was a paperhanger and contractor in 1925 at Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri. Ellen and William Edward Madel lived in 1935 at 6116 Ella Avenue, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Marie and Thomas. 

He died on February 21, 1936 at City Hospital Number One, St. Louis, Missouri, at age 65 of pulmonary tuberculosis at 9:50 p.m. Often painters in this era actually suffered from a form of lead poisoning that was misdiagnosed as pneumonia or tuberculosis. His wake was held on February 24, 1936 at Joseph W. Clark Funeral Home, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri, located at 1125 Hodiamont Avenue. His funeral service was held on February 24, 1936 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Wellston, St. Louis County, Missouri, the service was performed by Reverend William J. Dumped. He was buried on February 24, 1936 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri, in section 5, lot 000R, grave 1100.
