Joseph Francis Berg

Joseph Francis Berg was born on January 3, 1874 in Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was also identified as being born in June, 1874 in the 1900 U.S. Census. He lived with Francis Charles Berg from 1880 to 1893 at Des Peres, Missouri. He was enumerated with Francis Charles Berg, as "Joseph", on the June, 1880 U.S. Census at Central Township, St. Louis County, Missouri, he was listed as a six-year-old white male born in Missouri.

     Joseph Francis Berg married Emma Amelia Laumand on September 27, 1899 at 31 Clark Avenue, Tuxedo Park, St. Louis County, Missouri. Joseph Francis Berg is a head of household on the 1900 U. S. Census at Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, as "Joe F. Berg," he was listed as a 26-year-old white male born during June 1874 in Missouri. He had been married for nine months, was a grocery clerk who had been employed all year and rented a house on Essex Avenue. Enumerated with Joseph were Emma Amelia Laumand. He and Emma Amelia Laumand lived on June 14, 1900 at Essex Avenue, Kirkwood, Missouri. Emma and Joseph Francis Berg lived from 1903 to 1906 in Kirkwood. Residing with them were their children Earl and Margaret. In 1906 he owned Joe F. Berg Fresh and Salt Meats, Poultry, and Vegetables in Kirkwood, Missouri. He was the owner of J. F. Berg Meats and Vegetables between 1908 and 1909 at 211 North Webster Avenue, Kirkwood, Missouri, located south of Adams Avenue. Emma and Joseph Francis Berg lived in 1909 at 634 Geyer Road, Kirkwood. Residing with them were their children Earl and Margaret. 

Joseph Francis Berg is a head of household on the 1910 U. S. Census at Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, as "Joseph Berg" he was identified as a 41-year-old white male born in Missouri. He was a farmer and lived on Dougherty Ferry Road. Apparently the census taker was very careless or filled it in from memory as his wife and children's names are incorrect. Enumerated with Joseph were Emma Amelia Laumand, Earl Francis Berg, and Margaret Catherine Berg. Emma and Joseph Francis Berg lived from 1910 to 1937 on Dougherty Ferry Road, Kirkwood, west of Geyer Road, R.R. 13. Residing with them were their children Earl and Margaret . 

He was a farmer and dairyman from 1910 to 1937 on Dougherty Ferry Road in Kirkwood. 

He registered for the draft for World War One on September 12, 1918 at Kirkwood, Missouri, his description was Box 135, R13, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, age 44, born January 3, 1874, self employed dairying and farmer, wife: Emma Berg, medium height, medium build, brown eyes, dark hair. 

Joseph Francis Berg is a head of household on the 1920 U. S. Census at Bonhomme Township, St. Louis County, Missouri, he was listed as a 46-year-old white male born in Missouri. His father was shown as being born in Hamburg and his mother in Missouri. He was a general farmer who owned a farm on Dougherty Ferry Road which was mortgaged ands listed on farm schedule 33. Enumerated with Joseph were Emma Amelia Laumand, Earl Francis Berg, and Margaret Catherine Berg. 

He died on January 16, 1937 in Kirkwood, Missouri, at age 63. His funeral service was held on January 19, 1937 at Bopp's Kirkwood Chapel. He was buried on January 19, 1937 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Kirkwood.  He left a will signed May 1937. The terms of his will were: Case 12605; Probate Court of St. Louis County: A tract of land in the North part of Lot one (1) of a tract of land surveyed by Wm. Curley on the Dougherty Ferry Road, situated in the Northeast 1/4 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 2, Township 44 North, Range 5 East in St. Louis County, Missouri and described as follows: Beginning at a point in the South Line of Essex Avenue, as established by deed recorded in book 1099 page 374 of St. Louis County records, distant North 88 degrees 54 minutes, west 412.85 feet from the intersection of the East Line of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 2, Township 44 North, Range 5 East and South line of Essex Avenue, thence south 1 degree 34 minutes West 1057.7 feet to the North Line of property formerly of Henry Hoch, thence on said Hoch's line North 89 degrees 37 minutes West 990.88 feet more or less, to corner in line between lots 1 and 2, 1066.64 feet more or less to South line of said Essex Avenue thence on south line of Essex Avenue South 88 degrees 54 minutes east 1002.85 feet more of less to the beginning. Containing twenty four acres. Value $7,500, subject to deed of trust or mortgage of $2,000. Wife and executor: Emma Amelia Berg. 

His estate was probated on January 16, 1937 at St. Louis County, Missouri, Emma Amelia Laumand was the executor, beneficiaries were Emma Amelia Laumand, Earl Francis Berg and Margaret Catherine Berg; The inventory stated he owned 6 cows valued at $200.00, household furniture valued at $35.00, farm implements valued at $10.00 and 24 acres of ground and improvements valued at $7,500.00. It was appraised by Oscar Krieger, Thomas Kirkwood and Joseph Scheidegger on February 20, 1937.

The land was sold to Vandella Biesemeyer for $5,200.00 after being re-appraised by Leo Tegethoff, John Tegethoff and Theo Heege for $5,000.00 on August 10, 1937. Described as a tract of land in the North part of Lot 1 of a tract of land in Survey by Wm. Curley on the Doughtery Ferry Road situated in the Northeast 1/4 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 2 Township 44 North Range 5 east in St. Louis County, Missouri, and described as follows:

Beginning at a stone in the South line of Essex Avenue, as established and deed recorded in Book 1099 at page 374 St. Louis County Records, 225' E. of the West line of a tract of 34.72 acres conveyed to Joseph F. Berg by deed recorded in Book 211 at page 428 St. Louis County Records; being also the dividing line between Lots 1 and 2 of above Survey. Thence south 0 degrees 55 minutes West 1067.69 feet to a stone in the South line of said tract, thence on the south line of said tract South 89 degrees 38 minutes East 490,02 feet to a stone, thence North 0 degrees 55 minutes East 1061.35 feet to a stone in the south line of Essex Avenue, thence on the south line of Essex Avenue, North 88 degrees 54 minutes West 490 feet to the balance of beginning; containing 11.975.
