Henry Andrew Berg

Henry was born on January 23, 1881 at Des Peres, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was baptized on May 29, 1881 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, by Reverend Gerard D. Power the sponsors were Henry Matthew Böhm and Josephine Wilkibroski.

He and Lydia Marie Schoettle obtained a marriage license on December 12, 1900 at County Clerk's Office, Clayton, St. Louis County, Missouri, recorded in book 6, page 65. Henry Andrew Berg married Lydia Marie Schoettle, daughter of George Joseph Schoettle and Maria Catherine Blum, on December 12, 1900 at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. He was a grocery clerk in 1902 in Kirkwood. He received a letter of recommendation from Theodore Heege proprietor of Theo. Heege General Store located on the South East corner of Webster & Madison Ave. The letter stated: "To whom this may concern. That the bearer of this letter Mr. Henry Berg has been in my employ for two and 1/2 years and I have always found him industrious sober and honest and will gladly recommend him to any one needing his services. Yours resp T. Heege" on April 18, 1903. He was a grocery clerk in 1908 in Kirkwood. He was a self-employed express man from 1909 to 1920. He lived from 1909 to 1924 at 135 East Monroe Avenue, Kirkwood. Henry Andrew Berg is a head of household on the 1910 U. S. Census at Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, where he was listed as a 30 year old white male born in Missouri who had been married 9 years and could read and write. He was the proprietor of a meat market and owned a house a 135 East Monroe Avenue in Kirkwood that was mortgaged. Enumerated with Henry were Lydia Marie Schoettle, Elmer Henry Julian William Berg, Norman William Berg, Henry Andrew Berg Jr., Karl Wilhelm Walther Schoettle, Leonard Maximilian Berg, and Katherine F. Berg. He was a co-owner of the Berg & Anth, Meat and Vegetable Market on January 3, 1910 at 209 North Webster Avenue, Kirkwood. Lydia and Henry Andrew Berg lived circa 1911 in Weingarten, St. Genevieve County, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Henry, Norman and Elmer and their nephew Karl Wilhelm Walther Schoettle; the family moved there because of a lack of jobs in St. Louis, living there only a short time before returning to the St. Louis area. Father Kotty, Bennie Nagers & Mother, Yaegers, Hogenmillers, and the Yonks were close neighbors; Felix Donze owned the grocery store, the postmaster was named Hoganmiller. On July 6, 1911, he hired a lawyer in St. Genevieve to send a letter to Mr. Chris Schoettle in Edwardsville, Illinois to collect board ($75.00) and cash advanced ($13.50) for Walter C. Schoettle. Chris Schoettle was the guardian of Walter Schoettle. At the time Henry and the family lived in Weingarten, Missouri. At one time he operated Berg's Meat Market with Joseph Berg on North Kirkwood Road, north of Rott Hardware, just south of the alley, on the west side of the street. He registered for the draft for World War I on September 12, 1918 at Kirkwood, Missouri, he listed himself as an express man working for himself and American Ry Express Company, height was tall, build was stocky, color of eyes hazel and his hair was brown. His age was 37 years old, born January 23, 1881. Lydia and Henry Andrew Berg lived in 1920 at 135 East Monroe Avenue, Kirkwood, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Henry, David, Norman, Elmer, Mary and Dorothea. Henry Andrew Berg is a head of household on the 1920 U. S. Census at Bonhomme Township, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, as a married 39 year old white male born in Missouri and owning a home at 135 East Monroe Avenue in Kirkwood, Missouri which was mortgaged. His father was born in Germany and his mother in Illinois. He was an express man who owned an express company. Enumerated with Henry were Lydia Marie Schoettle, Elmer Henry Julian William Berg, Norman William Berg, Henry Andrew Berg Jr., David Francis George Berg, Dorothea Josephine Marie Berg, and Mary Katherine Berg. Lydia and Henry Andrew Berg lived in January 1924 at 135 East Monroe Avenue, Kirkwood, Missouri. Residing with them were their children Henry, David, Norman, Elmer, Mary and Dorothea. He died on February 15, 1924 at 9000 Manchester Road, Brentwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, at age 43 by homicide as the result of multiple gunshot wounds in the back at Link's chicken farm. His death certificate states 'by a gunshot wound in the heart, homicide.' He was shot and killed during an argument with an acquaintance at Link's Chicken Farm, a roadhouse on Manchester Road west of North and South Boulevard between Brentwood and Webster Groves in St. Louis County, Missouri. His funeral service was held on February 17, 1924 at 135 East Monroe Avenue, Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri, from his residence, Reverend William Maschoff performed the service. He was buried on February 17, 1924 at St. Lucas United Church of Christ Cemetery, Sappington, St. Louis County, Missouri, in block 6, lot 32, grave 7. (St. Lucas United Church of Christ was founded on March 1, 1880 when a group of men met in the rock schoolhouse on Gravois Road at Parke Road to form a German Evangelical congregation. It was known as "The German Evangelical St. Lucas Congregation of Sappington, Missouri" until 1964 when it became known as St. Lucas United Church of Christ.)  His funeral bill included:
